We are proud to announce our inaugural Corporate Responsibility Report. West’s commitment to sustainability and remaining active in the areas where we live and work are integral to West’s culture. In Parts 1-3 of this five-part blog series on the report, we focused on West’s efforts in Compliance and Ethics, Philanthropy and Diversity. The fourth part of the five-part series on West’s Corporate Responsibility discusses West’s Health and Safety programs.
Health and Safety
As an industry leader, West complies with all applicable health and safety laws and regulations. Our facilities are designed to adhere to the highest standards of health and safety. We strive to ensure that all workplace injuries and illnesses are prevented with the help of employees from every level of our organization. We also work to ensure that contractors working on West’s behalf perform their services in a manner that is consistent with the Company’s health and safety policy.
Each West manufacturing facility is required to establish and maintain a health and safety committee. These committees increase awareness of health and safety programs, facilitate health and safety concerns, identify potential workplace hazards and establish safe work procedures to prevent incidents from occurring.
Historically, West established annual numerical rate reduction goals to ultimately eliminate workplace incidents. We will continue enhancing our EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) Management System to add both lagging and leading indicators, which can reduce incidents to zero in the coming years.

Combination products open up new vistas when it comes to delivering innovative therapies to patients in need, but teams bringing these products to the market face a number of significant hurdles. Recent surveys conducted by West at workshops held in PA and AZ revealed some of our customers’ biggest challenges. This is the final of our three blogs focused on these challenges — and how West can help Simplify the Journey™ when it comes to developing a combination product.
Several of West’s experts will be featured speakers at The Universe of Prefilled Syringes and Injection Devices organized by 2013 PDA Europe, which will be held November 5-6, 2013, in Basel, Switzerland. West’s representatives will report on the latest trends in the world of prefilled syringes and innovations in the field of self-injection devices.
As a caring corporate citizen, West has established a long-standing tradition of supporting the communities in which we work and live. Our comprehensive philanthropic efforts include three programs: 1) corporate giving through West, 2) the Herman O. West Foundation, a separate 501(c)(3) entity, and 3) our employee-led fundraising program, West without Borders.
Primary container systems for storage and delivery of protein and peptide drugs (i.e., biologics), including vials and prefillable syringes, are typically made of glass or polymer, and include an elastomeric component (stopper or plunger). Proteins adsorb to most surfaces. Generally, the resultant loss of drug is not an issue since the amount adsorbed is on the order of 2-10 mg/mL, or not more than approximately 5 µg per 2 mL vial, or 13 µg per 5 mL vial.<br />
To reduce and detect particulate matter is a shared responsibility between Container Closure component suppliers and the pharmaceutical industry. Keeping the patient´s safety in mind, lively discussions about particle inspection were held in the panel session at the PDA Conference on Freeze Drying Technologies.
