West’s Waterford, Ireland site recently partnered with CALMAST which is Waterford Institute of Technology’s (WIT) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) engagement hub that was established in 2003 to drive more awareness of STEM, building on the work of secondary schools in the south east region of Ireland.
This initiative leverages the resources of WIT, such as their lecturers and facilities, while also working in partnership with schools, industry and business, local authorities, public bodies and non-governmental organizations. The core value of CALMAST is “STEM for all” as they work in a spirit of partnership to engage as many students as possible in the areas of STEM.
COVID-19 has created challenges for holding in-person activities, so CALMAST began holding their events in a virtual environment, including some recent events such as Math Week and Science Week. Moving forward, the West Waterford team plans to continue providing support for similar events organized by CALMAST.
“We’re very proud of our partnership with CALMAST. Our team members will have a unique opportunity to engage directly with students and demonstrate what a career in STEM can offer and hopefully encourage them to pursue STEM in their future studies,” Brendan Fitzpatrick, Senior Director, Operations, Waterford commented.
Recently, West was asked to participate in virtual discussions with Transition Year Students at a local secondary school. Two team members, Trevor Grant, Lab Supervisor, and Eileen Kirwan, Weekend Production Operator (who also attends WIT studying 4th year science), volunteered to speak with the students about STEM, and their careers at West. The events were a great success and the team in Waterford is looking forward to participating in future events, such as bringing students to the site once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, that will help educate students on STEM and the work we do at West.
West targets philanthropic giving and activities to those that align with our mission in the focus areas of children, people with disabilities, healthcare, and education – with a focus on STEM. Students from the <a href="https://www.dasd.org/STEM">Downingtown STEM Academy</a>, ranked the most challenging high school in Pennsylvania by the Washington Post, shadowed West’s Ambassador Interns during the week of June 26. Interns Andrew Ciciriello, Beth Crawford, Marissa D’Amelio, Neal Geosits, Hannah Grubb and Luke Lawn were each paired with a student and asked to mentor them on career options and the transition from high school to college.
Since its inception in 2011, the <a href="http://www.dasd.org/STEM"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Downingtown Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy</span></a> has quickly earned the ranking as the number one high school in the state of Pennsylvania. With the STEM Academy located in the same district as West’s corporate headquarters, and a strong corporate culture of giving back to the community, a partnership between the two organizations was a natural fit.
On March 25, 2017, West team members participated in the Girls Exploring Tomorrow’s Technology (GETT) Expo, a STEM career exploration event for girls in Grades 5 - 10. West sponsored the event which took place at West Chester East High School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Employees representing a variety of functions within the business helped to staff the booth.<br />
During the week of June 24 – 28, the West Ambassador Interns had the opportunity to mentor a group of high school seniors from the Downingtown S.T.E.M. Academy. The students were participating in a practicum at West as a requirement for graduation. During the week, each intern was assigned a S.T.E.M. student who shadowed the interns’ daily activities. We taught them about our respective departments and the responsibilities we have as part of the West team. The students also received lab tours and participated in a telepresence Lunch and Learn with the Scottsdale, Ariz., facility to learn more about West and its products.
At its 8th Annual Scholarship & Awards Banquet, the Young Men and Women in Charge (YMWIC) Foundation presented West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. with the organization’s first-ever Impact Award.
