In the first of three installments of our video tour of our Scottsdale, AZ, plant, Jeff Kyle, Sr. Director Operations and Supply Chain, speaks to what gets him excited about working at West: The knowledge that they are helping to improve the lives of patients by creating innovative drug packaging and delivery systems.
While compliance and standards are a very important part of the Scottsdale manufacturing philosophy, Jason Choi, Project Engineer, says—above all else—West employees keep in mind the patients who will eventually use the components and systems they’re making.
Creating a positive environment of like-minded employees starts with hiring the right people. At Scottsdale, employees dedicate themselves to serving the customer – and the patients impacted by their pharmaceutical products – to ensure products get out the door in time and are safely and effectively delivered to the patients.
Another aspect of that work culture, Kyle says, is the supportive environment in which employees work together, from top management to the technicians. It starts with mutual respect for everyone’s ideas in meetings – fostering a climate in which everyone feels, “we’re in it together” and a sense of ownership of the products they’re making as a team.
Today’s regulatory guidelines and requirements for pharmaceutical manufacturers are getting more specific and stringent, ensuring that drug products are safe and that there is no compromise with the possible use of unsuitable and/or non-compliant packaging components. For instance, regulatory guidelines require use of clean components (inclusive of secondary seals for this context) for sterile filling operations.
This year not only marks the 10th anniversary of our <strong>West without Borders</strong> tradition, but has added a new dimension to the principle of giving. All four West locations in Germany set out to demonstrate their social commitment while hosting a variety of activities in support of a local not-for-profit organization. Thanks to the great efforts of all involved, we were able to generate the record sum of <strong>€20,426.27.</strong>
West works by the side of our health care partners to understand patient needs and provide integrated delivery systems that optimize the effectiveness of drug delivery while enhancing the patient experience. Creative business models will ensure effective collaboration, either by leveraging West’s proprietary technologies or partnering with individual customers through the development process to apply West’s design, engineering and manufacturing skills to create customer-specific solutions.
At West, one of our core values is passion for customers. Their success is ultimately our success. Understanding our customers’ unique challenges and focus areas, ultimately helps us to better provide solutions for their needs. Recently, the West China Commercial Team visited one of our major local customers, Wuxi Biologics, and hosted its first large-scale on-site customer event, “Innovation Day.” As one of our major local customers, Wuxi Biologics is a leading company in China’s prosperous biopharmaceutical industry. The event drew over 140 participants and expanded our strategic collaboration, which will help us further support Wuxi Biologics with their specific drug development needs.
At West, we have adopted the philosophy that there are no IT projects, only business projects. Even business projects with a high dependence on IT are still business projects that require a business case with a measurable return on the investment. During the past year, West has been working to develop a unified project and portfolio management process. The initiative’s main goal is to ensure that we derive the full value from all business investments, including those that require IT enablement.
