As this year’s annual West without Borders campaign begins to wind down, West colleagues at the Exton, Pa., headquarters spent June 22 at the Lionville YMCA raising funds for Cure4Cam and Miracle in Motion.
The day included family fun, a swim-a-thon with more than 40 participants swimming over 10 miles to raise $5,000, and a trivia night hosted by the YMCA and West. Volunteers were on hand to help paint faces and supervise a variety of games for children. Treats and snacks were also provided.
Trivia night was held in the YMCA gym, and included pizza and other refreshments. Members of the community came out to compete, with all teams scoring well. In addition to the trivia, baskets and prizes were raffled at the event, including a large screen television, sports packages and round-trip plane tickets.
Thanks all the Exton team members who have supported not only Community Day, which raised more than $12,000, but also this year’s West without Borders campaign. We are thrilled to have raised over $60,000 in support of these two charities.

Barriers are very important for drug packaging systems. There are two roles demanded of a barrier. The first is to protect drug products from the environment. This is the primary function of a drug container closure system. The second is to prevent drug products from interacting with the packaging materials themselves. Elastomer closure manufacturers have been working to improve these barriers through multiple technologies. The technologies used on commercial products are traditional coating, and film lamination. Each has pros and cons.

Administration of cell therapy drug products requires the delivery of cell suspensions without loss of function or viability. Cells must be transferred aseptically from their original container closure system to the administration system by infusion. However, the common transfer practice of using needles and syringes to pierce vial stoppers to retrieve contents poses a risk, namely needle-stick injury to clinicians.
The development of new biosimilar products has increased over the past several years. Europe and Asia Pacific have been leading the industry with the greatest number of biosimilars being introduced to the market. Given the demand to reduce medical costs for patients, this trend is expected to increase globally in the coming years.
Most physicians agree - of all the services that can be performed for patients, eliminating the pain and fear of injections is at the top of the list. How can pain be minimized? One approach is to maximize syringe performance - whether the syringe is employed by a clinician, in an autoinjector, or in a wearable device. A critical element of syringe performance is the break-loose force. This is the force needed to overcome the plunger inertia in a filled syringe to initiate plunger movement and introduction of drug product. A lower, more consistent, break-loose force can provide for increased patient comfort.
