On March 18, 2014, West CEO Don Morel was the keynote speaker for the Beacon of Hope dinner held to celebrate the United Way of the Kearney (Nebraska) Area’s 50th anniversary. More than 200 attendees were on hand to help celebrate, and to hear stories of West’ philanthropy, which included a $25,000 donation from West to help the United Way reach its 2014 campaign goal.
“It was a wonderful surprise,” said Lisa Reese Parish, executive director of the United Way.
Dr. Morel talked about what those gifts can accomplish, both tangibly and intangibly, and included a history of the West without Borders annual fundraising campaign, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary when it kicks off again in May.
Said Dr. Morel in a newsletter to employees, “I am proud and honored that our West family has continued to make such an impressive contribution to those in need around the world. To date, the West team has helped raise more than $2.2 million through a variety of company-wide and local campaigns.”
West is proud to support the United Way as well as many other local charities that aid children in need in the communities where our employees live and work.

The global injectable drug market sees an ever-increasing adoption of high-value biologic drug products. More than half of today’s 20 top selling injectables are biologics, and many of them are delivered in a prefilled syringe. Even though glass syringes are predominantly used for primary containment of parenterals, the (bio)pharmaceutical industry continues to cope with certain limitations associated with glass prefilled systems.
Measuring container closure integrity (CCI) of polymer–based containers and syringes is a challenge. Tracer gas leak detection (i.e., Helium-leak)—the method endorsed by USP <1207> (<em>Package Integrity Evaluation – Sterile Products</em>)—cannot be used directly, because gases permeate polymers. Helium permeates at a very high rate, in part due to its small size. As such, direct use of Helium-leak with a polymer-based system will result in a leak rate above that measured with a glass-based system, that may be misinterpreted as resultant from a non-integral system, but is actually from Helium permeation.
At West, our goal is to partner with customers to mitigate risks of drug/packaging incompatibility, container/device and functional challenges. Although we consider critical quality attributes during development of drug packaging and delivery systems, there can be knowledge gaps of various interfaces based on the specific application of use, such as component-to-container, container-to-device, and container-to-drug.
