West is excited to announce an addition to its NovaPure® product line — NovaPure 3mL Cartridge components, which include plunger and seal components specifically designed to ensure consistency of delivery for higher-volume injectable drug delivery systems. The components were designed to address specific issues and challenges the pharmaceutical industry faces in bringing innovative injectable drug products to market.
There is a trend in drug development, especially for biologics, to evaluate higher injection volumes and viscosities. This presents a unique challenge to companies as they assess primary packaging component technologies.
The cartridge has been used as the primary container for the insulin and dental markets for many years. Because the cartridge is a proven container, many companies are evaluating new drug products such as biologics in cartridges to address requirements for larger volume injections.

Globally, the market for biologic drugs is growing significantly, due to their proven ability to treat major chronic diseases, in particular those found among an increasingly aging population. Cartridge systems are very important in delivering these biologic drugs; they can be used in autoinjectors, pen injectors, and wearable devices. Since biologics drugs are very sensitive, they require highest-quality cartridge components.
Drug delivery via cartridge-based systems has been around for many years, with traditional applications being for the dental and insulin markets. These traditional markets will continue to maintain much of the volume for cartridge-based systems in the future; however, there is an increasing trend toward other therapeutic classes of drugs, such as those that treat auto-immune diseases, that never used cartridges before. This trend, along with the projected growth in the insulin market, indicates substantial overall growth in the cartridge space over the next several years.
