At the 2013 Drug Delivery Partnership conference, West’s Bart Burgess partnered with Peter Krulevitch, Ph.D., Engineering Director, Packaging, Devices & Delivery, Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson to discuss West and Janssen’s unique partnership. Together, West and Janssen are developing the SelfDoseTM injector platform technology.*
The partnership began as an effort to meet patient needs with a simple, friendly self-administration device that would deliver Janssen biologic drug products. The product would need a reliable design that would be compatible with Janssen’s fill/finish infrastructure and easy to use for a range of patients.
Janssen has partnered with West to develop and manufacture the new SelfDose Injector Technology , an easy-to-use system designed for subcutaneous injection.

The conference will be held February 6-8, 2013, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, San Diego, CA.
The drive for high-quality packaging has helped manufacturers focus on increasing consistency of performance in devices such as auto-injector and patch injection systems. In addition, there is an increased focus on providing drug delivery systems that are easy to use. A consistent quality of components can help to improve performance and ensure delivery in the home environment, while user-centric systems can help assist with compliance.
As the adoption and acceptance of self-administered therapies grows, patients are spending less time with physicians and are playing a greater role in the delivery and management of their treatments. With the growing demand for extended-release and high-concentration formulations, more drug delivery systems choices are now available to differentiate drug products in a crowded market. Patient preferences can drive the selection of self-injection systems for a drug therapy. Selecting a system that patients prefer can, simplify use and increase compliance with the dosage regimen.

<span style="color: #000000;">West has completed a preliminary study of its SmartDose® technology platform, which incorporates a Daikyo Crystal Zenith® (CZ) cartridge. The study evaluated multiple attributes of the technology and subjects’ experience with the self-application process. </span>
