West’s Glen Zimmermann, Director, Sales & Marketing, Administration Systems, and Alvaro Estrada, Senior Director, Strategic Program Management and Technical Operations, will present, “Considerations for Integrated Drug Delivery Systems: Exploring new technology and innovation in injectable drug therapy devices” at the ISPE-DVC January Program Meeting on January 15, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Competition is advancing and regulatory requirements are expanding. This session will review global trends effecting both the innovators and generics with a focus on integrated drug delivery systems. Discussion will center on how devices can improve injectable drug therapy, manufacturing economics and overall patient care. Delivery systems will offer unique opportunities for companies looking to differentiate their drug product in this competitive global environment.
The number of biologic drug products marketed with an injection device has approximately quadrupled over the last decade. The growth in these drug therapies has been driven by several factors including new, self-administered therapies for chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune diseases. In addition, injectable therapy is now being considered as a treatment for more conditions, including asthma and cholesterol problems.
When left untreated, diabetes eventually can lead to a variety of issues for patients, including complications such as stroke, blindness and heart and/or kidney disease. In addition, adherence to painful or inconvenient injection treatments can be difficult for patients, with as many at 57% of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients admitting to intentionally skipping injections.<sup>1</sup>

It can take more than 12 years and a major financial investment to bring a drug product to market.<sup>1</sup> A drug product’s success relies on its efficacy, safety and manufacturing efficiencies along with the use of innovative strategies to meet evolving market needs and reinforcement of patient adherence. The importance of container closure and delivery systems as critical to success in the pharmaceutical industry is becoming more visible especially in respect to pharmaceutical and biotech organizations that desire to proactively minimize their risks.
