West is committed to the safe and efficient delivery of drug products to patients. An important aspect of this commitment is engagement in standards-setting organizations; West is a member of the European Pharmacopeia Commission, Group of Experts 16 – who contributed to European Pharmacopoeia 9.5 (effective July 2018).
Many chapters underwent revision and in particular, West contributed to Chapter 3.2.9 – Rubber Closures for Containers for Aqueous Parenteral Preparations, for Powders and for Freeze-Dried Powders. Revisions help to ensure that chapters accurately reflect changes in the marketplace, new regulatory issues and the latest technologies. In the case of Chapter 3.2.9, the scope was broadened to include coated closures, bi-layer seals and lubricated closures.
An example of a technical change that reflects a marketplace change includes revisions around concerns associated with ash and chemical testing. More and more, customers employ closures that are delivered already sterilized, and are therefore ready-to-use. For these closures, ash testing now permits omission of the steam/drying steps, and chemical testing permits omission of the boiling/washing steps. In other words, testing now more accurately addresses actual products.

Over the past several decades, IT has moved from a data-center model, where most information and data was inside the enterprise, to the Internet, where there’s more information outside the four walls of the enterprise than within it. More recently, the pervasiveness of mobility, social media, and bring your own device (BYOD) and cloud (BYOC) are bringing about both technical and cultural changes that are profoundly changing enterprise IT and computing.
West had the opportunity to participate in a Girls Exploring Tomorrow’s Technology (GETT) educational video series in February. GETT began in Chester County, PA in 2001 in response to the under-representation of young women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. GETT is an initiative of the Innovative Technology Action Group (ITAG), a program under the Chester County Economic Development Council, driven by the volunteer efforts of local organizations.
There are clear gaps in understanding in the market of combination products. A major one was highlighted at a recent workshop sponsored by West. A survey showed that <em>over 20% of attendees were not aware of the considerations needed to build a control strategy. </em>
The PDA Annual Meeting, “Modern Sterile Product Manufacture – Exploring Best Practices and Seeking New Approaches,” will be held April 15-17, 2013, at the Peabody Orlando in Orlando, Florida. This meeting will focus on the challenges currently faced by the pharmaceutical industry, advances in modern manufacturing and look ahead to the future of the industry.
Experimental characterization of an elastomer plunger in a particular pre-filled syringe system is essential to help pharmaceutical manufacturers determine whether that plunger is suitable for intended use. The strategy for a characterization study must consider relevant factors, in particular, compatibility with drug product and the ability to enable consistent delivery of drug product (dosage and time), by a clinician or by an autoinjector.
