Innovation at West is at the cornerstone of enabling both top-line growth and bottom-line results, and IT plays an important supporting role. West views social media, mobility, analytics and cloud computing as game-changers, as well as the biggest opportunity for IT to move quickly to innovate with the business. The consumerization of IT has driven down the cost of deploying technologies, and cloud computing has offered the ability to acquire IT as a service. So when it comes to plug and play, IT can move quickly with the business to innovate.
One of West’s most recent IT innovation examples is the introduction of electronic lab notebooks. Electronic lab notebooks are at the foundation of West’s integrated electronic laboratory. They can be used daily for all laboratory functions, from data acquisition through to sample and test management. The benefits that West and its customers will receive from this investment range from reductions in transcription and calculation errors to increased productivity and the elimination of missed work steps and deviations. All of this leads to improved quality for our customers and, ultimately, patients.
West IT continues to look for ways we can move quickly with our business partners to innovate and to solve business problems. We recognize the need to take advantage of emerging technologies to dramatically improve our business processes and lower our costs to serve our customers. Next month, we will provide insights into how West IT is taking on cloud computing to be able to weather any storm.

West IT is leveraging cloud computing to help realize those goals. West began its journey to the cloud several years ago by looking first at cloud service offerings for all new IT services. Such services allow IT to satisfy the strategic goal of cost-effectively enabling high availability of IT services in a more mobile and globally competitive world.
With the explosive growth in social media, mobile devices, cloud computing and access to data both internal and external to West (now referred to as Big Data), West IT has been working to ensure that we are able to leverage these transformational trends. In 2012, we updated our IT strategy to allow us to be part of the revolution while making it feel more like an evolution. The initial phase began with investments in cloud technologies – both private and public – to drive down IT operating costs and to enable us to take advantage of software enhancements made by our strategic partners.
One of the main risks associated with drug delivery via vial containment systems is particles that can result from fragmentation and coring of rubber stoppers subjected to needle or spike punctures. This risk can be mitigated by using prefilled syringe systems, whereby the drug dosage has been filled into the syringe by the drug manufacturer. The drug dosage is then administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. A prefilled syringe system generates fewer particles during drug administration, as compared to a vial containment system. Furthermore, this form of drug delivery system ensures efficiency and greater convenience.
