West is proud to announce that its 2017 Corporate Responsibility Report has been published and is now live on the West website. In its second year, this report provides a summary of West’s efforts in six key areas including Compliance and Ethics, Philanthropy, Diversity, Health and Safety, Environmental Sustainability and Quality. Being a good corporate citizen is part of West’s DNA. This is evident in our rich history of caring for the communities and environments in which we work and live. The 2017 Corporate Responsibility Report is a testament to this commitment, and we are seeing great progress across all of our focus areas.
Below is Part One of a blog series where we look a bit closer at each of our focus areas in the report. In light of the recent World Environment Day, our first post in this series will highlight our efforts in Environmental Sustainability.
Environmental Sustainability
As a company dedicated to producing products that improve patient lives and thus a healthier world, West is committed to creating a healthier environment. We strive to be stewards of a sustainable future by factoring environmental considerations into our decision making, from the raw materials we use, to our production and manufacturing techniques and to our packaging and distribution methods. At West, we believe that sustainable practices are directly related to sustainable economic performance and the creation of healthy communities.
There are more than 200 sustainability projects currently underway across the globe at West, with each manufacturing site focusing on approximately 10 – 15 improvement projects. Our Sustainability Program targets reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, waste, energy and water usage, and increased recycling.
In 2017, we saw great progress on the 2020 goals we established around energy, emission and water reduction. We are proud to report that the 2020 goals for both water and emission reduction have been achieved.
We are currently working on enhancing our goals around waste and renewable energy. Through recycling diversion projects, we are working on ways to divert waste from landfill and energy recovery, to more beneficial re-use channels. In addition, we continue to seek new renewable energy procurement opportunities. This effort will enable West to utilize alternative energy sources, helping to reduce our carbon footprint.
In 2017, once again West achieved the Gold Standard from EcoVadis, a leader in supplier sustainability ratings, placing us in the top 5% of reporting companies.

I’m coming towards the end of my 19th year at West in May this year. Today, I am the Global Facility Energy Manager, working as part of the Global Facility Engineering team. Previously, I joined the West Dublin site as a Maintenance Technician and after two years I was promoted to Facilities and Maintenance Manager.
West believes that, as a global organization, we have a duty and obligation to contribute to a sustainable future and that each of us, working together, can make a difference. While we know that sound environmental practices make good business sense, the underlying reasons behind our commitment are the many benefits these practices provide to our communities, now and for future generations. As a company with the mission to improve patient health, it stands to reason that we are equally committed to a sustained investment in creating a healthier environment.
West is proud to announce that we have published our 2021 Corporate Responsibility (CR) Report, Purpose. Driven., which is now available on <a href="/about-west/corporate-responsibility">West’s website.</a> <br />This is West’s 6<sup>th</sup> annual CR Report, and highlights ESG successes from over the past year, including progress on environmental sustainability goals, diversity and inclusion, and success around the Company’s philanthropic efforts. The publication also highlights some of the recognition received for our ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) performance, including placement in Barron’s Top 100 Most Sustainable Companies, Corporate Social Responsibility Programme of the Year from Pharma Industry Awards in Ireland, and a Silver Stevie Award for Corporate Social Responsibility.
