West Volunteer Spotlight - Karin Bergstein

Inclusive environments actively cultivate space where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. For West team member Karin Bergstein, Executive Assistant, QA, EU & General Management, Germany, inclusion is a driving force behind her passion to volunteer. Karin’s daughter, Klara, lives with a genetic defect known as MAC F1. Currently, there are 10 children worldwide with this diagnosis. This genetic defect causes neuronal migration, which often results in developmental delays and cranial nerve deficits. Those that are affected by MAC F1 have impaired intellectual development which can cause poor speech and social deficits, making independent living difficult.

In 2024, Karin decided to take her passion for inclusion and volunteering. She became highly involved with the organization, Inklusiv Wohnen Aachen e.V. (IWA), whose mission is to foster inclusive living situations. They provide housing for individuals with disabilities where they can live independently together with students to enjoy social participation and access the support they need.

“It inspires me to contribute towards creating an inclusive community where Klara and others with similar challenges can thrive,” Karin explained when she was asked why she felt connected to this philanthropic organization and continues to give back to those with mental and/or physical disabilities.

On June 21, 2024, IWA were honored at an award ceremony at the State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich for the exceptional work they have accomplished. At the event, IWA was awarded 3rdplace for the `Award for Generous Sharing` and Karin accompanied IWA as a volunteer since Karin had proposed and submitted the project.

Additionally, IWA was recognized for their collaboration with Selbstbestimmt Wohnen e.V. (Self-Determined Living) and their success in meeting regional needs.

IWA was also recognized for their work in the “Wohnschule” project, where volunteers came together to prepare individuals with complex disabilities for independent living within inclusive housing formats.

IWA stands out amongst other organizations because of their resilience during the pandemic. They continued to maintain support and ensure the community of these vital services during challenging times, spreading inclusive living solutions to those seeking independence.

Thank you, Karin, for all your hard work and time in giving back to others in need, helping to promote independent and inclusive living for those with disabilities.
