West is thrilled to announce that Thaisa Silvestre, Director, Sales, Brazil, was recently named as 2019 HBA Rising Star.
For the last five years, West’s employee resource group, WIN (Women Investing and Networking), has continued its successful engagement as a corporate member of HBA. Each year, we can select a Rising Star or Luminary based on the criteria set forth. Rising Stars are professionals in various sectors of the healthcare industry at various career stages and disciplines and have demonstrated noteworthy achievements in furthering their careers.
Thaisa joined West in 2010 and has nearly 20 years of industry experience with healthcare companies-- Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers, EMS, and Softcaps. As Director of Sales for Brazil, she oversees the day-to-day management of sales, marketing, customer service and technical support across the market. Thaisa’s passion for leadership and development of her sales team has led to West’s Brazil location achieving double-digit sales growth over the past five years.
Thaisa was recognized at the 2019 HBA Women of the Year (WOTY) event on May 9, 2019 in New York City. Congratulations to Thaisa on this well-deserved recognition. We are thrilled to recognize her achievements and contributions as our 2019 HBA Rising Star.

Imagine self-administered cancer treatments in the comfort of a patient’s home. How close are we to making this a reality? During this unprecedented time, immuno-compromised patients can benefit from receiving a self-administered, home-based treatment option. One major factor into making home-based cancer treatment a reality is a focus on shifting the route of administration from intravenous to subcutaneous delivery. Due to an emphasis on patient involvement in shared decision making for health care policy and medical approaches, understanding the intravenous to subcutaneous transition in medical injections has garnered increased importance. If therapeutic efficacy is not compromised, the less invasive nature and convenience of subcutaneous injections is often the preferred route of administration.<sup>1-2,4-6</sup>
Regulatory and market expectations constantly increase. Novel drug products such as cell and gene therapies have a very high value and therefore each dose is precious. With that, drug product manufacturers face increased pressure to minimize rejects of finished drug products. One aspect of this is controlling particulate matter. Particulate matter in finished drug products can come from a number of sources, including the ingredients in the drug product, manufacturing equipment and environment, or the components of the container closure system. This blog describes approaches to control and measure particulate matter.
Recently, 16 of the interns from the 2019 West Ambassador Internship Program visited two West sites in Jersey Shore and Williamsport, Pennsylvania. As interns from the corporate headquarters, the tours of the two local manufacturing locations offered a unique perspective to contrast the corporate experience. During the Jersey Shore and Williamsport tours, the interns were given a different experience to visualize the making of the product itself.
