In 2016, West reached another quality milestone -- <strong>ISO 15378</strong> (<em>Primary Packaging Materials for Medicinal Products</em>) certification for manufacturing facilities in North America. For injectable drug products, coring and fragmentation of elastomer stoppers is a critical concern. This is caused by tearing or shearing a fragment of the stopper in a vial during insertion of a needle or a spike. The cores/fragments that enter the drug product may lead to harmful patient outcomes. Testing of stoppers is a must for many pharmacopeias. Coring and fragmentation is complex and influenced by many factors, in particular the stopper and the needle.
Synthetic rubber has replaced natural rubber in many fields over the past decades. Very notable are the synthetic halobutyl rubbers used as a base for pharmaceutical elastomer components. They are an excellent choice due to their attributes of low permeability to air and moisture, excellent aging resistance, and low level of extractables. Halobutyl rubbers are available in two types, chlorobutyl and bromobutyl; both can be manufactured by co-polymerization with halogenated monomer.
The combination product market has seen a significant amount of growth,<sup>i</sup> driven primarily by the rise in chronic disease indications, the demands for self-administered therapies and technological advancements. The use of combination products simplifies the process of drug administration for the patient and/or the caregiver and, in some cases, allows the patient to receive treatment at home rather than having to travel to a medical facility.
