Understanding the different compendial and standards requirements, and how they influence the final delivery of parenteral drug products, is critical for ensuring patient safety. There are ongoing efforts to harmonize national pharmacopoeia and international standards, driven in large measure by the continuous technological developments in the pharmaceutical industry. Harmonization efforts can be treated differently depending upon the country and working group, and in some cases larger differences result. Staying aware of changes and differences can be a challenge.
That is why West has compiled a table, for easy referral and comparison, listing the key features of the most widely used compendial chapters and international standards. It is organized by testing category, i.e., physicochemical, functional, and biological. This table allows the similarities and differences to be seen easily, enabling comparison of testing required by USP <381>, Ph. Eur. 3.2.9., ISO 8871 series, JP 7.03, and YBB series. For example, for particles testing it is easy to see that it is not included in USP <381>, Ph. Eur. 3.2.9. or JP 7.03, but it is included in ISO 8871 series and, depending on the application, some YBB documents. This table can be found in the West Knowledge Center.
West is constantly anticipating and staying aware of changes in compendial and standards requirements, and in many cases participates in their working groups. The purpose of a service dog is to assist and bring joy to someone’s life. To train a service dog is a massive undertaking, with the first year of that training coming in the form of “puppy-in-training.” West volunteers have had the privilege of sharing in the raising of three puppies in training as part of its ongoing commitment to Canine Partners for Life, an organization dedicated to placing service dogs. The most recent of those is an adorable black lab named Cret.
<p>On March 18, 2014, West CEO Don Morel was the keynote speaker for the Beacon of Hope dinner held to celebrate the United Way of the Kearney (Nebraska) Area’s 50th anniversary. More than 200 attendees were on hand to help celebrate, and to hear stories of West’ philanthropy, which included a $25,000 donation from West to help the United Way reach its 2014 campaign goal.</p>
Compendial documents developed by both international and national organizations outline specifications for elastomeric components that are used in packaging of parenteral drug products. These specifications often are not harmonized; not all compendia specify the use of the same tests, and some tests that are used globally have varying specifications. Understanding these specifications and how they influence packaging/delivery of parenteral drug products in global markets is critical.
West associates at the Williamsport and Jersey Shore, Pa. facilities recently honored veterans at the First Annual Veteran’s Day parade. Decked out in West fleece jackets and carrying a West banner, a group of 45 associates and family members marched through Williamsport to honor members of the armed forces who are presently serving or who have served the country. The group distributed candy and West key chains to onlookers as they made their way to city hall, where Jim Collins, Jersey Shore Director of Operations, served as a parade judge.
