In the latest installment of our video series, West on the Road, we travel across the Atlantic to our manufacturing facility in Eschweiler, Germany. There we meet Manager of Process Engineering Martin Rothstein, who says he’s impressed at how often he has encountered West products in his private life, whether visiting a family member in the hospital or during a vaccination appointment for one of his two small children.
Rothstein and the teams at the Eschweiler facility produce high-value pharmaceutical packaging products, turning materials into high-quality elastomeric stoppers, plungers and other components for the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. With the biopharmaceutical industry experiencing a shift toward patient-centered, quality care, it is increasingly important to maintain strict manufacturing processes to decrease risk. With this in mind, Rothstein explains that for many customers, it’s important to work with a provider such as West that manufacturers all of the various packaging components for a drug product under one roof, ensuring minimal risk.
The teams at Eschweiler have a long history of providing high-quality components; they possess a deep knowledge of the production process and are able to provide the right support to the customers to help them improve patient care around the world. Check out this new video to learn more about the work being done at West’s Eschweiler facility and visit our Careers page to learn more bout working at West in Germany.
My name is Michele Polinsky and I am a breast cancer survivor.<br />These days it’s the simple things that make me happy. Watching my daughter play soccer at Virginia Tech, taking my son to high school and watching his soccer games. Celebrating holidays and birthdays. Simple things that you take for granted when you are healthy. And you start to worry won’t be in your future when you are first diagnosed with cancer. It’s a scary time.

One factor of parenteral drug product quality is the container closure integrity (CCI) of the primary packaging system. The interaction between the sealing surface of the elastomeric component and the vial is vital to ensure stability of the drug product over the shelf life. Therefore, defects found on the elastomeric component can increase the risk of failure or end-of-the-line rejects.
A new regulatory guidance in the US has clarified expectations for pharmaceutical companies wishing to transition from an existing pharmaceutical component wash process to another, such as the Westar® Ready-to-Sterilize (RS) process.
Exposure to light is a concern with numerous medications due to the potential for photodegradation or other chemical reactions during manufacturing, storage, and administration(1). This may result in potency loss, altered efficacy and adverse biological effects. The sensitivity of a drug to a distinct spectral region of light may vary with its chemical structure, photoreactivity, and nature of the dosage form. The photochemical behavior of a drug provides guidance for handling, packaging, and labeling of drug products. The use of the appropriate containers and packaging material can protect the products from the deleterious effects of light.
