Today’s business environment demands a seamless and continual transition of digital experience to conduct business and engage various stakeholders in the same way we conduct the rest of our lives outside work. The experience expectation is consistent across devices of choice from phones to tablets to laptops. That’s why West partners with the world’s top pharmaceutical, biotech, device and diagnostic companies to embrace technology that supports the patients they serve with online resources and tools to better manage their health. In turn, we’re looking to support our customers with digital tools to help speed the research and development process of bringing life-saving medicines to patients that need them.
Companies seeking to bring an injectable medicine to market are required to complete an immense amount of research on the medicine itself, but they must also study the containment or device options to help ensure that medicine is delivered safely to the patient. The regulatory hurdles associated with combination therapies that include both the medicine, together with a device, represent a host of additional regulatory requirements.
To support customers, West’s Knowledge Center offers an online repository of scientific and regulatory support content that can help customers get the information they need quickly to manage this regulatory process. West also offers commonly requested, detailed product information, including specifications and drawings, on our entire portfolio of elastomer packaging components, pre-filled syringe solutions and wearable devices. Recently, we added the ability to purchase some of these same products through our online store. All of these services are available across a range of digital platforms, so that customers can easily access this information 24 hours a day, regardless of the device they use.
This is just one of the ways West is working to Simplify the Journey™ for our customers, by making it easier for our customers to do what we consider to be some of life’s most important work—developing innovative new medicines to address unmet medical needs. With the prevalence of Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) rapidly increasing globally, West is working with its pharmaceutical partners to support their development of new injectable treatments for this serious liver condition. However, there are many challenges associated with trying to bring new treatments to market.<br />
The global pen injector and auto-injector markets have witnessed significant growth due to the increasing demand for self-administration of injectable drugs. Pen injectors and auto-injectors provide a user-friendly and convenient solution for patients to administer medications, contributing to improved patient compliance and overall healthcare outcomes. There are well established traditional market segments that use cartridge-based delivery systems, including dental local anesthesia and diabetes care, as well as human growth hormone and allergy therapies. However, there have been significant developments in the incorporation of cartridges in auto-injectors as supposed to the traditional syringe designs.
Focus on extractables and leachables (E&L) from packaging and delivery systems began in the mid-1990s but, since then, regulatory agencies have become more educated, and expectations of the pharmaceutical industry have increased. Examples of updated recommendations include USP<1663> and <1664> and injectable drug recommendations from Product Quality Research Institute (PQRI). Complex drug product formulations have become more common, so it is imperative to have a deeper knowledge of extractables to understand risks associated with potential interactions between packaging and drug product. <!--1664--><!--1663-->
This year not only marks the 10th anniversary of our <strong>West without Borders</strong> tradition, but has added a new dimension to the principle of giving. All four West locations in Germany set out to demonstrate their social commitment while hosting a variety of activities in support of a local not-for-profit organization. Thanks to the great efforts of all involved, we were able to generate the record sum of <strong>€20,426.27.</strong>
When combined with the industry trends of increased regulatory scrutiny and higher focus on patient safety, risk management, and compliance, the market is seeing an increased need for high-quality drug delivery systems such as prefillable syringes.
